Professor Shahriyārī’s manner toward his mother was exceptional. As a rule, he would not answer calls while lecturing, but if it was his mother calling, he would take her call and was at ease in speaking to her in their native Āzarī dialect. The professor’s mother was ill for a period of about two years. During this time, if he needed to take her to the hospital, all other priorities were deferred. One day we had an appointment with Professor Shahriyārī and a few other important people when his mother’s illness required his attention. He called before the meeting and excused himself from attending.
