One of Shahīd Shahriyārī’s colleagues

He allowed his students to make mistakes. Sometimes he would create an environment in which the student could criticize him or question him, so that the student would gain self-confidence. He believed that we should allow students to make mistakes. He would say, “Isn’t that how we learned? Let these students make mistakes so that they can learn from them.” This was a teaching moment. I never saw a student be reproached by Professor Shahriyārī for asserting a false scientific thesis. He would point out the reason why the position was false, but he would never belittle or demean anyone for holding it.
